Average Is Where It’s At
Nanners came over tonight to hang out for a bit. I forget, when I’m being a hermit, how great it is to just sit on the couch and talk to a friend.
As girls sometimes do, we got to talking about relationships. I recalled an article or blog or something (my memory is always SPOT on) that was written about a man. It detailed why he would never date a woman who was considered a ’10′ and how he preferred women in the 4-8 range.
It wasn’t because he was one of those dickface jerkoffs who seeks out women who are insecure so that he can bully them around — his reasoning was actually fairly fascinating.
I’m pissed I can’t remember where this article was, but whatever.
Basically, he said he didn’t want a woman who was a ’10′ because she likely knew she was a 10. She was more likely to be full of herself, shallow, concerned with her looks, etc. He felt like women who were 9s were on the same slippery slope, desperately trying to achieve 10-status.
Women who are devastatingly beautiful their wholes lives don’t have to cultivate personalities. They don’t have to learn patience. They can rely heavily on their looks and therefore don’t need to work harder to be intelligent or strive to be successful on their own merits.
It was beautiful. Yay for the average girls!
I think the argument is true for men. I don’t want to date a man who thinks he’s hot shit. I don’t want to date a man who cares about what he shoes are communicating about his social status. Fuck that noise.
There is something so delightfully charming about average.
Not too tall. Not too short. Not too fashionable. Not too schlumpy. Not so extremely smart that he belittles your feeble brain. Not so stupid that he can’t remember which way he loops his belt. Not drop dead gorgeous. Not ugly either.
Just comfortable, cozy average. This isn’t about settling either. This is about realistic expectations for the kind of partner that would be equal parts about him and equal parts about you.
But seriously, how many flies are you gonna catch when you’re online dating profile tagline is ‘Average seeking average’?
I’ll let you know.
